What is the FUS?

Image The Universal Foundation of the Sardana (FUS) was created in 1992 with the main objective of increasing international awareness of our dance, which we see as an expression of peace and solidarity between different peoples.

The Sardana is a dance which bonds people together in a free expression of common unity. It symbolises ideas of freedom, order, rules, solidarity and peace. Performed in an open circle, which excludes nobody, the dance is therefore more than just an example of localised Catalan tradition. It is, instead, a dance which unites different people from all over the planet, in a similar way to the Olympic Games, and international conferences, fairs and other collective gatherings of diverse communities.

In order to achieve this goal, the FUS was created in the shadow of the Barcelona Games in 1992 and has been present at each of the subsequent games – Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

A Commission of Honour, comprising leading figures from the arts, science and human rights, gives the FUS a higher profile. Many historically-renowned artists, writers and musicians have also been captivated by the spirit of the Sardana... Casals, Strauss, Stravinsky, Schweitzer, Thomas Mann, Monsalvatge, Picasso, Sert, Mir, Dalí, Miró, Casas, Tàpies... all of whom have embodied the ideals of the Sardana in their creative work.

We feel that the FUS mission statement is best expressed in the words “The Sardana, a dance for the world”
